NASHVILLE, TN · HISTORIC ESTATE & WINERY

Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery

Nashville's most iconic antebellum estate spans thirty acres of manicured grounds, featuring a Greek Revival mansion, a restored carriage house, and an on-site winery. Belle Meade is where Southern history meets modern celebration, and its grand staircase and sweeping lawns have provided the backdrop for some of the most stunning wedding photography in Tennessee.

Why Choose Belle Meade for Your Wedding

Belle Meade is not just a wedding venue. It is one of Nashville's most important cultural landmarks, a property that has been part of the city's identity for nearly two centuries. The Greek Revival mansion, with its towering white columns and grand front staircase, is immediately recognizable to anyone who has spent time in Nashville. Choosing Belle Meade for your wedding means choosing a venue with substance, a place where the architecture, the history, and the natural beauty of the grounds all work together to create an atmosphere that feels significant and celebratory in equal measure.

From a photographer's perspective, Belle Meade is extraordinary. The combination of classical architecture, open lawns, mature trees, and the warm tones of the restored carriage house and winery buildings provides an almost unlimited range of backdrops. I have photographed weddings here across every season and in every type of light, and the property consistently delivers images that feel timeless and elegant. Couples who choose Belle Meade are typically drawn to its sense of grandeur without pretension, the feeling of hosting a celebration in a place that matters, and that energy translates directly into photographs that carry real emotional weight.

Iconic Photo Spots

Belle Meade offers more distinct photo locations within a single property than almost any other venue in the Nashville area. Here are the spots I return to again and again because they consistently produce remarkable images.

The Grand Staircase

The front staircase of the Belle Meade mansion is one of the most photographed spots in Nashville for good reason. The symmetry of the white columns, the elegant curve of the stairs, and the height of the facade create a frame that makes every couple look like they belong on the cover of a magazine. I use this location for both wide establishing shots that capture the full grandeur of the mansion and tighter compositions that focus on the architectural details surrounding the couple. The staircase faces east, which means it catches beautiful warm light in the late afternoon as the sun moves behind the mansion and wraps the columns in a soft, glowing sidelight.

The Carriage House

The restored carriage house at Belle Meade serves as a reception space, but it is also a stunning location for portraits. The weathered wood and stone exterior has a warmth and texture that contrasts beautifully with formal wedding attire. Inside, the exposed beams, string lights, and rustic-elegant decor create an atmosphere that photographs with depth and character. I especially love shooting in the carriage house during the transition from cocktail hour to reception, when the interior lights begin to glow against the fading daylight outside.

The Grounds and Tree-Lined Paths

Belle Meade's thirty acres include rolling lawns, ancient hardwood trees, and stone-bordered pathways that offer a more natural, relaxed setting for portraits. The large open lawn in front of the mansion is perfect for bridal party group shots with the estate in the background, while the shaded paths beneath the old oaks provide soft, even light that is ideal for intimate couple portraits. In autumn, the grounds are transformed by rich foliage that adds layers of color to every image.

The Winery

Belle Meade's on-site winery adds a unique dimension that most Nashville venues lack. The barrel room, tasting area, and vineyard-adjacent spaces offer a distinctly different aesthetic, darker, moodier, and rich with texture, that creates beautiful contrast when paired with the bright, airy images from the lawn and mansion. I love incorporating a few winery shots into every Belle Meade gallery to give couples a complete visual portrait of their day.

Belle Meade Wedding Tips

After photographing at Belle Meade in different seasons and at different times of day, I have gathered a set of practical insights that I share with every couple planning a wedding here:

  • The front of the mansion faces east, so schedule bridal portraits for the late afternoon when the light wraps softly around the columns rather than hitting them directly
  • Allow at least thirty minutes for couple portraits at Belle Meade because the property has so many distinct locations worth capturing
  • The carriage house interior can be warm during summer months, so consider an evening ceremony time if you want outdoor comfort and beautiful reception light
  • If you are doing a first look, the tree-lined path on the south side of the property is secluded enough for privacy while offering gorgeous natural light
  • Belle Meade is a popular tourist destination, so midweek and Sunday weddings often provide a more private experience on the grounds

Ceremony & Reception Spaces

One of Belle Meade's greatest strengths is the flexibility it offers for ceremony and reception configurations. Outdoor ceremonies can be held on the front lawn with the mansion as the backdrop, in the garden courtyard for a more intimate setting, or beneath the shade of the property's ancient trees. Receptions typically take place in the carriage house, which can accommodate up to 250 guests and provides a warm, atmospheric space that looks equally beautiful with candlelight or string lights.

The flow between ceremony and reception at Belle Meade is naturally smooth. Guests can transition from the ceremony site to a cocktail area on the lawn before moving into the carriage house, and each of these transitions provides wonderful opportunities for candid photography. I capture the moments of guests mingling on the grounds, the way the evening light plays across the property, and the anticipation that builds as everyone moves toward the reception.
